The John’s Crazy Socks Story
For John Lee Cronin, socks were never just about keeping his feet warm.
Unique and colorful socks presented a way for Cronin, who was born with Down Syndrome, to express his emotions. The love of “crazy socks” helped define the personality of Cronin, who competed as an athlete in the Special Olympics. Today, socks are Cronin’s livelihood, as well as a way to give back to people in need.
In 2016, John Lee Cronin and his father, Mark, created John’s Crazy Socks, an online-only business specializing in brightly patterned footwear. The company is headquartered in Huntington, the same Long Island town where Walt Whitman was born and where John Coltrane composed A Love Supreme.
Thanks to a smart business model and John Lee Cronin’s undeniable charm, John’s Crazy Socks quickly became popular. Today, the company employs 35 people, with nearly half of those positions held by people with disabilities.
More Than a Sock Company
Of course, John’s Crazy Socks is more than a sock company. It’s a sock company with a mission. While John and Mark filled over 100,000 orders, they also raised over $120,000 for various charity partners. Their company donates 5 percent of all earnings to the Special Olympics. Other charity partners include the National Down Syndrome Society and the Autisim Society of America.
